Badrinath in place of Laxman

The  All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Tamil Nadu batsman Subramanium Badrinath as the replacement for VVS Laxman who announced his retirement from International cricket on August 18.

Laxman was initially part of the 15-man squad for the two-test series against New Zealand starting on August 23. But in a surprise move, the classy right-handed batsman decided to call it quits, saying it was time for him to move on and let an youngster take his spot.

Badrinath, who is considered one of the best in domestic cricket, has not received enough chances to represent India in the five day format.

The middle-order batsman, who is nearing 32 years of age, has played only 2 Tests for his country, both against South Africa in February 2010. He got to bat 3 times in those two matches and he managed to score a half-century in his maiden innings before getting out for 6 and 1 in the subsequent ones. He has also played 7 ODIs and a lone T20 for India.

Badrinath's first class record on the other hand is pretty impressive as he accumulated 7836 runs in 104 matches and an average of 60.74 with with 28 hundreds and 34 half-centuries
