Virat Kohli is the future of Indian cricket, says Sourav Ganguly – Cricket News Update
The former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, is all praise for the new batting sensation, Virat Kohli and believes that the right-handed batsman is the future of the country’s cricket.
The 23-year-old cricketer from Delhi, after performing exceptionally well at the junior level, burst into the scene of international sport in 2008 and has been a permanent member of the national team in limited-overs cricket since then.
Kohli made his Test debut last year against West Indies and scored his maiden ton in Australia, proving his credentials in the longer version of the sport as well.
In India’s recently concluded tour of Sri Lanka, the young top-order batsman was in smashing form, scoring two superb hundreds to clinch the Player of the Series award.
Ganguly, who is considered to be one of the best captains in Indian history, admires the right-hander’s performances and hopes that the youngster will bear the burden of India’s batting in the coming years. The former middle-order batsman is satisfied to see the sport’s future in safe hands.
"He is not only the next star; the future of Indian cricket rests on Kohli. The future of Indian cricket will always be good with so much of interest in the sport," said Ganguly.
Kohli has already scored 13 One Day International (ODI) centuries in the 90 matches he has played till date, which is a world record. With an astonishing average of 51.81 runs per innings, the stylish right-hander is without doubt one of the best batsmen in world cricket at the moment.
While talking about some of the other young players, ‘Dada’ expressed that some extremely talented individuals are coming through the ranks of domestic cricket, who can serve the country in the long run. However, he wants the selectors to be patient before excluding the senior players from the side.
"They all have talent. The transition happens over a period of time. It will take some time. To be specific, we have five players – Tiwary, Dinda, Wriddhiman SahaAnustup Majumdar and Shami Ahmed – who not only have the ability but the temperament to play for India," he added.
