London: Durham fast bowler Graham Onions showed England's selectors what they were missing as he recorded career-best figures of 9 for 67 after a motorway dash to play in his county's Championship First Division match at Nottinghamshire on Thursday.
Onions had been on England duty at Lord's in London until Thursday morning when he learned he wouldn't be part of Andrew Strauss's starting eleven for the third and final Test against South The 29-year-old was released to join up with Durham and drove to Trent Bridge in time to feature after lunch on the second day's play.
Allowed to take the field for Durham as a replacement for Mitch Claydon even though the match had already started, Onions took the opportunity to underline his England credentials with a devastating 16.3-over effort that gave him the best figures in county cricket this season.
Even the only wicket not credited to Onions was all his own work as he swooped to run out Luke Fletcher with a direct hit when the Nottinghamshire player tried to pinch a quick single.
Thanks to Onions' heroics, Nottinghamshire were dismissed for 154, giving Durham a 40-run first innings lead which they increased by another 27 runs at the start of their second innings before close of play.
