Lunch Report: Virender Sehwag's fiery batting was the focal point of the opening session of the first Test against New Zealand as India reached 97 for 2 at lunch on Thursday.
Sehwag smacked nine fours in his 41-ball knock before being snapped up in the second slip by Martin Guptill off Doug Bracewell. The right-hander got two lifelines in the ninth and 13th overs, before he finally ran out of his luck and gave a simple catch to Guptill. Cheteshwar Pujara, who had come on to bat at No. 3 - the spot left vacant after the retirement of Rahul Dravid, was unbeaten on 12 while Sachin Tendulkar was also not out on 12 at the break.
Both Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir (22) made full use of the wayward bowling in the first hour of play, scoring boundaries with relative ease before the latter edged a good length delivery from Trent Boult to wicketkeeper Kruger van Wyk. The left-hander shared 49 for the opening wicket with Sehwag.
Daniel Flynn, fielding at square leg, failed to pull off a rather tough chance when he ran backwards to try and catch a mistimed pull shot by Sehwag off Chris Martin in the ninth over.
Sehwag once again was let off when a thick outside edge flew in between the wicketkeeper and captain Ross Taylor at first slip off the bowling of Bracewell.
